SEED GERMINATION is the process by which an organism grows from a seed or spore. STAGES OF SEED GERMINATION : Imbibition-the seed absorbs water, swells, and activities that enzymes the growth process. Respiration-the seed uses oxygen to break down the stored food and release energy. Mobilization- the seed digests and translocates the food to the growing parts of the embryo. Growth-the seed develops a root (radicle) and a shoot (plumule) that extend towards the water and the light sources. Development: the seedling produces leaves and starts photosynthesis.
THE PARTS OF A SEED: Seed coat: a tough protective outer covering Endosperm: a food store of starch for the young plant to use until it is able to carry out photosynthesis Embryo: the young root and shoot that will become the adult plant. The embryo is a tiny plant that has a root, a stem, and one or more leaves4.
