Germination is the process by which a seed grows into a plant. In the process of seed germination, water is absorbed by the seed, which results in the expansion of the seed. After the beginning of water uptake, or imbibition, the radicle (which further develops into the root) emerges from the seed growing deeper in search of water and nutrients this also helps to keep the plant upright as it grows. Then the plumule (which further develops into the stem) grows upwards in search of sunlight by this stage in germination there is no need for the cotyledon, so it falls off and becomes part of the soil. So, the plant grows leaves which aid in photosynthesis which is the process by which the plant makes its own food
